Get To Know the 2009 Championship Ring

Since every Lakers player contributed in some way towards earning the franchise’s 15th championship to conclude the 2008-09 season, it was fitting that much of the organization’s brain trust had a say in the design of the championship ring to be given out prior to Tuesday’s game against the Clippers.

Several members of the Buss family - including Dr. Jerry Buss, Jeanie Buss, Joey Buss and Jesse Buss - joined Senior VP of Business Operations and CMO Tim Harris, GM Mitch Kupchak and team captains Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant to weigh in and produce a gem (so to speak).

Here are some of the ring’s details:

ARROWThe gold is of limited edition 15 karat variety to represent the 15th championship earned by the organization.

ARROWPer the request of Dr. Buss, there are 14 diamonds surrounding the top of the ring symbolizing the previous 14 franchise championships, with the Larry O’Brien trophy in the middle to represent the 2008-09 title.

ARROWAs requested by Fisher and Bryant, there is a player image on the side of player rings, and within that image rests an etching of their respective jersey numbers. For example, Kobe Bryant's image contains the No. 24 in the upper right hand corner of that side panel.

ARROWThe Los Angeles skyline is an element unique to non-player rings in place of the player’s image.

ARROWThe ring is two toned, with white gold representing the Lakers Sunday whites uniforms that honor legendary broadcaster Chick Hearn.

ARROWEach ring is authenticated by a serial number, and to further protect the authenticity, there are hidden etchings of the Lakers logo.

ARROWKupchak contributed the idea to include the varying records of every individual playoff series on the side of the ring, which was done in addition to having the season record to capture the journey of the entire season.

Streetball - Let There Be Light

Streetball - Let There Be Light on Streetball.

Streetball - Let There Be Light on Streetball.

In the beginning, God created Streetball. And Streetball was without form and void. And darkness was upon the face of the game. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the game and God said, Let There Be Light. And there was Light. And God saw the Light, and it was Good. And God divided the Light from the darkness.

Landry On The Rise

Rockets' forward emerged as the go-to guy in third season

Carl Landry has taken the game to new heights this season.

Rockets.com Staff Writer
Houston - "Carl!"
Rockets coach Rick Adelman and Assistant Chief Jack Sikma is from the bench again, yelling at their third-year power forward with a look of irritation on their faces. Many times during the two-plus seasons, this scenario has played itself out during the game, as the Houston coaching staff efforts to reduce and improve the stupidity that is usually associated with youth.
For those who do not know, such as constant criticism and supervision may look as if Carl Landry was in vain, ultimately destined for nothing more than fodder NBA, which is a symbol of hope and unrealized potential.
Reality, of course, is that Landry is anything but.
A little more than two and a half years removed from college career at Purdue, Landry has developed into the early candidates Sixth Man of the Year, combines athleticism with rocking melt efficient offensive game to give the Rockets a deadly 1-2 punch at the power forward spot starter with Luis Scola . His per 40 minute average of nearly jumped from the page (24.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game), as well as career .581 field goal percentage of his. From the players point of view of efficiency, Landry ranked among the ten best forwards in the NBA.
But they only sparkling numbers tell part of the story. Yes, Landry has taken a big step since exploded in the middle to the scene through a rookie year. But still there is room for significant improvement. So understand that when the Rockets' coach was showered with love Landry strong, it was only because they see a player who still has much more to offer.
"He must realize that we need him to be great every game for us," said Adelman. "When we try to post him and tried to leave him, he must demand the ball and understands that he has the ability to score against anyone in this league, I do not care who it is. This is just one more step he must take, that he was wrong one of our go-to-person. "
Only a few can understand that Landry would never get that "go-to" label on him entering the league as a second-round vote in the 2007 NBA draft. That he did so is evidence of natural ability, but also for the hard work he put in the second on his own and with the Rockets' player development staff. During the second season, he added thing is certain-midrange jumper to the barn and this year the absence of Yao Ming in the middle has allowed him to exhibit a very smooth low post game, too.
Maybe more than a few raised eyebrows when Adelman called Landry the best post player (non-Yao division) before the season starts, but it becomes difficult to argue with the assessment that after watching the various ways Landry has successfully completed the down low. He does so with balance and footwork is incredible, enabling him to summon the spirit Barishnikov while spinning and leaping over defenders on his way to the basket. Combine those moves with dead-eye shot from the charity line (89.6%) and that's a little surprising that Landry is making the transition from the energy crisis when a man for murder.
"Carl has shown the skills necessary to become a good low-post player," Sikma confirmed. "He's got good footwork and he has a good trunk strength to hold the position. The first step is strong."
But, as with all things Landry, satisfaction with the status quo is not part of the Rockets' guidelines. Like clockwork, Sikma deftly switch gear and switch to the theme of constant improvement sermon.
"The way that used to get together, expect it and are still the key balancing things to do," he began. "I think, has a good mix, but if you talk about improvement, he recognized the need to focus on what works and what does not. Sometimes I think he took a picture tougher than she needs or may choose to shoot takea tougher than he needs .
"And then turnovers, in the sense that they would only know to swipe and enter that into the formula and say," Hey, they really come, this step will not be available or will be at risk because they 're really there to dig . "So I think it was more just to understand the situation, gain experience and even become moreefficient."
To credit, self-analysis Landry often mirrors that of coach. Talk to him about a rapid improvement in the offensive end and he tends to switch the subject and quickly shows flaws in the defensive end. For good reason, too, because there was no doubt aspects of the game most in need of work.
"Defense won the game and I always said I had to work on defense," admitted Landry. "Sometimes I get in foul trouble and I thought I was stupid offense. And sometimes I'm out of position when I felt like I could have half a second before. It's just my basketball IQ and defense are areas I need to work on . It's just something that needs to get used to. At university, I really did not play much defense. "
Hal-of-fact acceptance led to howls of Landry, type of infection that made laugh out loud like a 6-9 forward and fan favorite teammates together. It's that personality that allows him to handle constructive criticism he received in peace, in the same way he took a bounce pass in the lane before turning on the way to the edge for two-handed slam malignant. He knew his name would be shouted at the crowd frenzy more time to come. He also understands why it's important he listened. Because of that, and only then, can he hope to consistently hear "Carl!" In a different sense - as did the players who have fully realized the potential and took his place among the best two-way forwards in the game.
And-1s: Landry is scheduled to start in place of the injured Luis Scola to the game Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers. Scola was forced to leave Sunday night's contest in Oklahoma City during the opening quarter with a cut on his right eyelid. He needed seven stitches and did not return. Monday morning, he was undergoing extensive eye exam showed no structural damage to the eye itself. Scola will be held on Wednesday out of the game because of swelling around the eyes and will be listed as day-to-day after that ... After practice on Monday, Rick Adelman was asked about the progress made by Tracy McGrady, who tried to return to action after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in February. Adelman argued that there is no timetable set in place to guard again. "It's just a process," Adelman said. "I can not tell you what the schedule, but he practiced, he was working. That's what we're going. We will find that (schedule) out when we got there. He looked OK. It seemed fine. He just must continue to push myself and try to take every step. "

Bobcats notch first road win of 2009-10 in Washington

Behind Gerald Wallace’s sixth straight double-double and ninth of the season, the Charlotte Bobcats picked up their first road win since last March with a 92-76 victory over the Washington Wizards. Defense, rebounding and great passing fueled the rout, capping a perfect 4-0 week for the Bobcats heading into Tuesday’s showdown with the Boston Celtics.

Outrebounding the Wizards 40-39 and outshooting them .461 to .385, the Bobcats raced to a first quarter lead they would never relinquish. Raymond Felton’s steady play at the point guard position continued with 12 points and five assists, giving him 22 assists and just 1 turnover during this four-game winning streak.

Celtics 92, Heat 85

Key Moment

Kevin Garnett was the player of the game for the Boston Celtics, and he was the key cog in what wound up being the most important run that his team made in the entire game.

With the Celtics ahead by only one point with 2:12 remaining in the game, KG stepped into his comfort zone and drilled an 18-footer from just beyond the left elbow to pad that lead to three. On the ensuing Heat possession, James Jones clanked on a 3-pointer and Garnett skied high for the big rebound, tossed an outlet pass to Rajon Rondo who then found Ray Allen wide open for a transition 3-pointer. With Allen's three, the Celtics went ahead 89-83 with 1:38 left on the clock. That was the run that put Boston ahead for good, and it might not have happened with out the Big Ticket on the court.

Key Box Score Line

Kevin Garnett had his most impressive game of the season, making 11 of his 12 field goal attempts and scoring a game-high 24 points. He often looked like his old self in dominating at both ends of the court, and the Celtics couldn't be more excited to see that prior to the calendar turns over to December.

Box Score Nuggets

  • Rajon Rondo (13 points, 11 assists) and Kendrick Perkins (14 points, 13 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for the Celtics.
  • Eddie House, Marquis Daniels and Brian Scalabrine all made one 3-pointer and finished with three points each off the bench.
  • Boston dominated the paint for the second straight game, scoring 48 points in the lane.
  • Miami scored 31 points in the first quarter, but only 34 points in the second and third periods combined.
  • The Heat committed only 12 turnovers, but were limited to only 12 assists, just one more than Rajon Rondo alone.
  • Only 28 points were scored by bench players in the game.
  • Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 27 points, but the Heat were outscored by 14 points when he was on the floor, which was the worst +/- rating of any Miami player.

Quote of the Night

Paul Pierce on the importance of winning the first game of the Celtics' road trip: "The first one [on the road] is the big one. This was a big win for us. Miami is playing well at home. We started to rush things in the third quarter. We let them back in the game early in the fourth. Our bench was tremendous. It is a good win on the road against a quality ball club.

Lakers “Got A Feeling” In Silencing Thunder

A few hours before L.A. tipped off against Oklahoma City, Lakers Executive Vice President, Player Personnel Jim Buss was asked to what extent the current Lakers squad was designed with superior size in mind.

“Absolutely,” he said. “One hundred percent.”

While there is no overstating the impact that Kobe Bryant makes on a basketball team, the thing opposing teams have literally had no answer for when facing L.A. is the combination of size and skill in seven footers Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum plus the 6-10 Lamar Odom off the bench.

It’s like trying to eat ice cream with a butter knife. You can do it if you have to (full dishwasher?), but it’s probably not going to end well.

When adding Ron Artest to that frontcourt, neither Jim Buss nor his father Dr. Jerry Buss, when addressing L.A.’s beat reporters, could think of a better front line dating back to the 1986 Boston Celtics that featured Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Bill Walton off the bench.Last June, even with Bynum still making his way back from a midseason knee injury, the Lakers took the Bryant + Bigs formula all the way to a championship.

This season, after waiting 11 games for Gasol to begin his 2009-10 campaign, the recipe appears to be back in full effect after L.A. backed up a running of the (Chicago) Bulls on Thursday with a silencing of the Thunder on Sunday.

The game was so clearly over early in the fourth quarter that Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas performed an impromptu version of “I’ve Got A Feeling” as Fergie, Alex Rodriguez from the Yankees and B-Real from Cypress Hill flanked him at courtside (only in L.A., right?).

Oklahoma City didn’t have to wait long to see what the Lakers can do when firing on all cylinders; L.A. put together perhaps its best quarter of the season and bursting to a 35-16 lead. Bryant began what would be a particularly entertaining evening by converting three fantastic displays of offensive skill that including a behind-the-basket, um, floater?** Meanwhile, Bynum put up 11 points and five rebounds, while Gasol kicked in six points, three boards and three assists.
**Like, from behind the basket while standing almost on the baseline. Bryant said that he hadn’t made such a shot in a game since high school.

“It was pretty crazy tonight,” said Bryant, referring to his moves, the Black Eyed Peas and two more ridiculous Shannon Brown hammer dunks***. “Pretty crazy. We had our rabbit foot on.”
***See postgame numbers for explanation.

As it were, OKC didn’t quit after the early barrage, but L.A.’s lead wasn’t remotely threatened as a 14-point second quarter differential would be as close as the visitors would get.

“Any time you play against the Lakers it’s a humbling position to be in,” said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. “We weren’t making shots tonight and that was because they were defending us throughout the game very well.”

The Lakers found good shots, the Thunder finished the game at a 37.2 percent clip. Kevin Durant, the league’s fifth-leading scorer, made only 2-of-9 first half shots with Ron Artest draped to his hip, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting thanks only to a 6-of-11 third quarter.“I thought there were some inspiring basketball actions tonight,” said Phil Jackson. “There were some things that we felt we did really well defensively … I really like the way Ron plays defense. He got out there and really shut down some of their scorers and it really helped us.”

Artest added seven points, seven boards and three assists to his defensive effort, while Bryant finished the game with 26 points on 11-of-23 shooting, plus seven assists and six boards.

The twin towers? Bynum (despite being a game-time decision after jamming his ankle late in Thursday’s game) was a beacon of efficiency in nailing 9-of-11 shots for his 25 points, plus nine rebounds and two blocks, just missing his 10th double-double in 11 games. Though Gasol rimmed out more than a few times, he still managed 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting with six assists, seven boards and a block.

To good, too long, too strong.

The Lakers go for their third straight terrific all-around effort on Tuesday against New York, but until then, your numbers:

POSTGAME NUMBERS
1 L.A.’s new streak of victories while wearing the white jerseys, which ended last week against Houston after the team had won all of their Sunday and holiday games last season.

3 Absurdly cool moves by Kobe Bryant in the first:
A) While falling out of bounds after he thought he was fouled, Bryant floated a jumper over the backboard and straight through the net.
B) Starting on the right wing, Bryant flew past his defender, twirked his body around a few more bodies and finished a reverse layup.
C) To end the quarter, Bryant corralled a loose ball and quickly threw it up from 15 feet … with his left hand. Off glass, then net.

9 Lakers turnovers in an impressive display of ball control. By comparison, Oklahoma City had 19.

45 Approximate inches jumped by Shannon Brown when throwing down Jordan Farmar’s alley-oop with one hand. “I honestly didn’t know how high the ball was. I knew he was going to throw it, so I made eye contact. I saw him make an undercut on one side so I did an undercut on the other side and when he threw it up there I just tried to get it.” Moments later, “TNT Legs,” as Bryant described him, added another baseline one-hander for good measure.

81.8 Andrew Bynum’s shooting percentage with an impressive 9-for-11 performance that netted 25 points.

2,382 Consecutive games officiated by Dick Bavetta after Sunday, currently in his 35th NBA season. Bavetta will be 70 years old on Dec. 10.

Mavs put the foot on the gas in Indy

In the city that plays host to the Indy 500, the fast-breaking Mavs drove out to a big lead and put it on cruise control to the checkered flag against the Indiana Pacers, writes Earl K. Sneed.

Dallas Mavericks 113 at Indiana Pacers 92

It seems only right that the hard-charging Dallas Mavericks run their road winning streak to five in the city that plays host to the Indy 500.

The run-and-gun and fast-breaking Mavs drove out to a big lead and put it on cruise control to the checkered flag against the Indiana Pacers on Friday night, as the Dallas starters watched from the sideline in the fourth with plenty of gas left for the second night of a back-to-back after a 113-92 runaway win.

"We're happy to get out of here alive," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said after the win. "This isn't an easy game. These guys can put a lot of points on the board. But fortunately they were missing some shots tonight and we were active defensively."

In a game matching the NBA's sixth and eighth leading scorers, the Mavericks entered Indianapolis hoping to play balanced team basketball, much like they did in Houston en route to a 130-99 blowout win over the Rockets. Dallas accomplished that goal once again, getting another solid effort from the Maverick bench.
"Our offense really seems to be clicking," Dirk Nowitzki said. "The last two games we've done a good job of swinging the ball and shooting the ball well."

For the second straight game, the Mavericks put out a starting lineup of Jason Kidd, rookie Rodrigue Beaubois, Shawn Marion, Nowitzki and Drew Gooden. As advertised, the two superstars, Nowitzki and the Pacers' Danny Granger, paced their squads early on. No. 41 set the Mavs up for a big first quarter with 11 early points, before J.J. Barea's buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave Dallas a 35-26 lead after one.

With the starters getting rest on the bench and Kris Humphries dominating the glass, the Mavericks' second unit put distance between themselves and the Pacers early in the second period. Pushing the tempo and increasing the lead to as large as 22 in the quarter, Dallas took a 66-54 advantage into the half.

Behind Humphries' 10 rebounds, the Mavs held a 29-17 rebounding edge after the first 24 minutes of play.

Nowitzki led all scorers with 19 first half points, while Jason Terry added 11 points off the Dallas bench to help the Mavericks shoot 50 percent. Meanwhile, Granger's 15 points in the half kept Indiana close.

"My first couple of shots felt good. All around, our offense has been looking better the last couple of games. I like what we’re doing lately," Nowitzki said.

Nowitzki and the Mavs kept coming in the third, as Dallas attacked the rim more aggressively in the period. Scoring easily inside, Dallas began to drive and kick it outside for the long range shot. Following that formula, the Mavericks pushed the lead back up to 26. Scoring the last 11 points of the third quarter, after a Carlisle 20-second timeout with Indiana within 15, Dallas took a 95-69 lead into the fourth.

"They’re aggressive. They have some competitors and are well coached. The third quarter, we protected the ball and kept executing," Nowitzki said.

With the big lead in the pocket, the Mavs' starters sat on the bench and iced in the fourth in preparation for the second night of a back-to-back. The Dallas bench was up for the challenge of finishing the Pacers off for the night, as James Singleton made the hustle plays to put the cap on the eventual 21-point win.

"Singleton gave us great energy," Carlisle said. "We made a good push when he was in, in the first half. "He's just physical and rebounds. He makes a lot of things happen. He was ready to play, and our second unit was good."

Nowitzki led the way with a game-high 31 points without playing a second in the fourth quarter. Uniform code

Do you know what you're wearing to Mardi Gras?

The New Orleans Hornets know exactly what they'll be wearing on game night four times in February.
mardigras.jpg
NBAE via Getty Images

And now that they've unveiled their alternate uniforms commemorating the special event, there might be more than a few folks rocking these multi-colored game jerseys in the Crescent City in the coming months.

Since I've never been schooled on the finer points of the uniform code, I'll bow down to the wisdom of others like ESPN Page 2 uniform guru Paul Lukas.

Personally, I can't imagine an instance where I'd be inclined to pair green and purple with gold. But I haven't been to Mardi Gras in years either.

But if it works for the experts and it works for the good folks of New Orleans, then it works for me (on the Hornets).

Julian Wright (left) and rookie Darren Collison are in much better shape right now, so they can work it without sleeves. I might need a long sleeve hoodie or something underneath to do these uniforms justice.

I'd love to be in the Big Easy to celebrate Mardi Gras in style. Really, I'd love to attend. But only if I can pick my own wardrobe.

Careful King James

LeBron James plays with the reckless abandon that thrills fans and leaves observers in awe of his unreal physical abilities. But even the King has his limits. On this dunk (below) from the fourth quarter of Wednesday's loss to the Wizards James aggravated a left wrist injury that Plain Dealer Cavaliers beat writer Brian Windhorst called the "low light" of his game recap.

Windhorst also details some of the lessons the Cavaliers need to learn from their loss to the Wizards, including this gem: "I'm a little shaken up at the moment, I must say. I just taped a segment for SportsCenter over the phone with Scott Van Pelt out in the arena bowl here at the Verizon Center. We had to record it twice. Why? Because in the middle of the first take, a rat the size of a rabbit went zooming past my feet. I wish I was kidding. Seriously."

Nice, huh?

He actually had more constructive advice for the Cavaliers, including this valuable insight:

"Regardless of what the Wizards say about preferring to face Zydrunas Ilgauskas instead of Shaq, not having him had a huge affect on the game. Just compare the box scores of the two times the Cavs have played the Wizards. People say that Shaq clogs the lane but that is too narrow of a viewpoint.

When Shaq is in the game he cannot be left or it is a dunk. In most cases, Shaq actually opens the lane for this reason. And for evidence of that, consult the Orlando and Miami game films.

Dwight Howard couldn't leave Shaq to contest shots. Brendan Haywood was a non-factor the last time these two teams met, tonight he had three blocks and six offensive rebounds. The key is for the Cavs to learn to operate both ways, to play small and move the ball with him out and to use him and take advantage of him in the game."
Harrington shows no mercy

For all the good times Al Harrington enjoyed during his six-plus seasons with the Pacers, the Knicks forward has enjoyed just as many since then against his former team.

In fact, he hasn't shown his former team much love since moving on after the 2003-04 season - though he did resurface with the Pacers for 36 games during the 2006-07 season. His 26 points Wednesday helped the Knicks snap the Pacers' five-game win streak.

In addition, Harrington's average of 22.9 points against the Pacers in his career, easily his best against any team. Harrington has also logged more 20-point games against Indiana (12 in 15 games) than he has against any other opponent, per Elias Sports.

Harrington insists that it has never and never will be anything personal.

"We needed a win," he said via text message Thursday afternoon. "That's all to it."

Oddly enough, Harrington stopped that five-game Pacers' streak five years nearly to the day of the anniversary of one of the darkest times in the franchise's proud history. Today marks the five-year anniversary of "The Brawl," which prompted this extensive look back and forward from Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star. It's a thorough examination of not only what went on but also the aftermath and the influence its had on the organization to this day.

There's too much important and insightful information here for it to be ignored.

The Air up there

For five years we've watched Josh Smith take flight like few other men on the planet can. And every time, the folks in attendance at whatever arena the Hawks' high riser is playing in that night rise to their feet in unison, as if they've never seen it before.

It would be strange if I hadn't been there, court side, for most of these airborne stunts he's pulled. Maybe it'll get old when Smith (who is all of 23 until next month) gets old and can't dunk anymore, or not.

"Dirty" still gets it done

After so many years of seeing him play at such a high level, it's easy to overlook the fact that Dirk Nowitzki is arguably as unique a player as the NBA has ever seen.

When you consider his mind-boggling mix of size and outside and mid-range skill, it's hard to find a comparable talent on just pure dimensions and pure ability.

Dirk has aged better than many of his contemporaries; guys like Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter come to mind. He's avoided serious injury throughout his career and his most dangerous quality -- he can find the bottom of the rim from anywhere on the court -- is one skill that never fades.

He's been around for so long and played so well for so long that it seems we've begun to take for granted just how rare a player he is (it seems like just yesterday when the Mavericks were busy fleecing the Bucks on draft night, swapping Dirk for the rights to Robert "Tractor" Traylor in one of the all-time great draft heists in all of sports).

I'll admit to being a non-believer a few years ago. I was there in Dallas and Miami the year the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals and it seemed like Dirk wilted under the immense pressure of the moment.

It was Jason Terry, and not Dirk, that emerged as the dominant figure for the Mavericks during that series. But since then, as the Mavericks have gone through coaches and supporting cast members, Nowitzki has been the one constant.

He's been the one thing that hasn't changed a bit. Outside of Kobe Bryant, there may not be a tougher late-game match up for a single defender in all of basketball, something the Spurs were reminded of Wednesday night (Dirk scored scored 32 of his season-high 41 points after halftime to lead the Mavericks to their second straight overtime win).

And as Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News points out, this is undeniably Dirk's team now and until further notice.

Big 3 +1?

The VIP section of the Eastern Conference has been a three-team party the past two years with only Orlando, Boston and Cleveland allowed admittance inside the velvet rope.

But someone else is trying to get in.

The Atlanta Hawks have won six straight games, including a 105-90 demolition of Miami Wednesday, and doing their very best to crash the party.

"If somebody said Washington, Chicago and Philadelphia were the top three teams in the league coming into this season it still wouldn't have mattered," Hawks sixth-man Jamal Crawford said. "We still have to go out there and play. And as long as I've been in this league, actions speak louder than words."

Said Hawks' captain and All-Star Joe Johnson: "We've never listened to the naysayers about our team. We could care less what's written on paper or what somebody had to say about who is supposed to go where. We've tried to do our talking on the floor."

That includes wins in Boston and Portland, and six straight home wins to push their record to 10-2, tied with Phoenix for the top overall mark in the league.

Still, there's been a prevailing theory that the Eastern Conference consisted of the Big Three and everyone else, a theory not shared by "everyone else."

"I think everybody feels like the ball is in the air and it's a matter of who is going to go get it," said Heat center Jermaine O'Neal, whose team is 7-4 after back-to-back losses to Oklahoma City and the Hawks. "Right now everybody has issues. Do we feel like those three teams are better than us? No we don't, not at all.

"Cleveland, they're a good team. But we don't feel like they're better than us. Orlando just had a huge blow with Jameer Nelson's injury. Boston isn't playing to the level they expected. So I think teams like Atlanta and us, we're absolutely in the mix with those other three teams."

Time will tell. But so far this season, it's safe to assume that the VIP section is going to need a few extra chairs, at least for the time being.

"We know we're a good team," Hawks forward Josh Smith said. "We're not a cocky bunch of guys but we're confident in ourselves. And we know that we have the depth that we need this year. And we're treating each game more precious than the last because we know we have something good going here."
A little more of what went on while you were sleeping:

Michael Wilbon of the Washington Post sees some encouraging signs now that the Wizards have snapped that pesky losing streak: "The Washington Wizards, on the other hand, had lost six straight and seven of nine to start the season. They were shooting the ball miserably. Gilbert Arenas looked, well, awkward in this new role of more traditional point guard. The new offense appeared a little discombobulated. The Wizards, frankly, reminded more than a few of us of the Redskins. Not good. So what happened in Game 10 of the Wizards' season? They blew out the Cavaliers, 108-91. They came from 17 down to lead by 20 in the fourth quarter, a 37-point swing that overwhelmed LeBron James and featured probably the Wizards' best stretch of basketball so far."

***

Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe points out Doc Rivers' new stance on 3-pointers and how that helped the Celtics recover from their two-game skid: "I got on him, and I rarely do, about the threes,'' Rivers said of Rasheed Wallace. "Because even though he was wide open, it's really tough. I mean, he was wide open and he took two, but we had just taken two quick ones. But he's got an incredibly high basketball IQ. He's been phenomenal in the locker room. So, I'm just happy to have him."

***

Steve Adamek of the Bergen Record highlights Eddy Curry's return and revival for the Knicks: "Playing his first significant minutes since March 7, 2008 after three cameos during a tumultuous 2008-09 season on and off the court, Curry demonstrated the force he can be in just 11:44. He scored 10 points, driving the lane with reckless abandon at times and looking like his old self on the blocks, with D'Antoni calling plays for him to get him going. "You forget what a presence he is under the basket and you forget what it's like to have that presence," D'Antoni said. "It just gives us another dimension to the offense."

***

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel details Stan Van Gundy's desire for Vince Carter to play like ... well, Vince Carter: "If anything, the coach has said, Carter has played too unselfishly. Instead, Van Gundy says he simply wants Carter "to be Vince." Carter responded Wednesday night with arguably the most aggressive game of his brief Magic tenure. He scored a team-high 18 points and collected six rebounds to lead Orlando to 108-94 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first game without Nelson. "That's probably the reason why he wanted me to just be more in attack mode," Carter said. "He expects Jameer and I to do it together. So, with him out, he expects me to kind of carry the load in that aspect of it. That's fine. I've been there before. That's my game. I just wanted to assert myself tonight."

***

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic shines the spotlight on the Suns' new hero: "The Suns signed Jarron Collins and he has played 59 minutes, a mix of spot rotation duty and mop-up minutes. But even if he has not been what the Suns billed they were adding, he has been exactly what they needed."

***

Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times writes that Pau Gasol is set to make his season debut for the Lakers tonight against Chicago on TNT: "The right hamstring that kept Gasol out of the Lakers' first 11 regular-season games, the injury that hampered him for just over five weeks, healed enough to where he feels comfortable enough to play in a game. "I think that I'll be able to go tomorrow," Gasol said after practice Wednesday. "It felt great today and I don't plan on any reason why it wouldn't feel the same way tomorrow."

***

Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune identifies yet another rookie point guard that's playing a huge role for his team: "Just when the jittery Utah Jazz looked perfectly capable of squandering another big lead, they got a needed dose of poised leadership from an unexpected source Wednesday night at EnergySolutions Arena. Rookie Eric Maynor scored 11 of his 15 points during a seven-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and the Jazz escaped with a 104-91 victory over Toronto."

***

Ken Berger of CBS Sports captures the mood of the Hawks' dramatic turnaround from 13-win disaster to true player: "The world is upside down, as though the entire NBA is suddenly adhering to the marketing philosophy of a local Atlanta burger joint called Flip Burger. There, the gimmick --- besides delicious burgers -- is upside-down chairs anchored to the ceiling. "If we stay healthy and keep doing what we're doing, I don't think anybody could sweep us," said Josh Smith, on his way to an All-Star season after terrorizing Miami in all phases Wednesday night in Atlanta's 105-90 victory over the Heat. "We'll make a series out of any team."

***

Arash Markazi of Sports Illustrated has found a Magic supporter of LeBron's Jordan plan: "I thought it was just fabulous that he would think about everybody retiring the No. 23 that Michael wore," Magic Johnson said Wednesday. "Me and Larry, we don't really get into that. We care about the game, and if everybody votes that nobody should wear 23, we're going to be the first ones to say that it should happen. We all know how the game was and who's made a difference, and Michael definitely made a big difference. Larry and I started it off after Dr. J and those guys passed it on to us, and then we passed it to Michael and he took the game to a whole new level. We're all in favor of that if that's what everybody wants."

Memphis Grizzlies point guard, Allen Iverson never out of the gossip. After absence due to Atlanta on business the subject of gossip, rumors have now he would move to the Cleveland Cavaliers!

Washington Post is throwing the issue. In a column, Iverson would have wanted to appear as a winner. For that he will join the team qualify for the opportunity to play-offs. The bad performance of Memphis will make his appearance rethink Iverson.

The columnist's, the Cleveland Cavaliers are the most appropriate team for him.

Could it happen Iverson played with LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal? Almost impossible.

Imagine, O'Neal was paid U.S. $ 20 million, while LeBron U.S. $ 14 million. There is still a revenue stamp Žydrūnas Ilgauskas salary of U.S. $ 10 million. Mo Williams had to pay U.S. $ 8.7 million.

Iverson fee is U.S. $ 21 million. Is it possible to catch the salary cap Iverson Cavaliers?

This is an interesting listening to.
